What Is Earl Grey Hot Chocolate?

Earl Grey hot chocolate is a beverage that combines the classic flavors of Earl Grey tea and hot chocolate. Earl Grey tea is a black tea infused with oil of bergamot, a citrus fruit that gives the tea its distinctive floral and slightly tangy aroma. Hot chocolate, on the other hand, is a creamy, sweet drink made from melted chocolate or cocoa powder mixed with milk or cream.

When these two come together, the result is a drink that balances the deep, smooth richness of chocolate with the bright, aromatic notes of bergamot. This fusion creates a flavor profile that is both comforting and sophisticated, appealing to those who enjoy complex tastes.

Why Try Earl Grey Hot Chocolate?

If you enjoy experimenting with flavors, Earl Grey hot chocolate offers a fresh alternative to traditional hot drinks. Here are some reasons to give it a try:

  • Unique flavor combination: The citrusy bergamot cuts through the sweetness of chocolate, creating a balanced taste.

  • Comfort with a twist: It’s a cozy drink with an unexpected floral note.

  • Versatility: You can customize it with spices like cinnamon or vanilla to suit your preferences.

  • Great for tea and chocolate lovers: It bridges two popular beverage worlds.

What to Expect from the Taste

The first sip of Earl Grey hot chocolate might surprise you. The chocolate provides a creamy, sweet base, but the bergamot adds a bright, slightly tangy flavor that lifts the drink. The tea’s floral aroma can make the chocolate feel lighter and more refreshing.

Some people describe the taste as:

  • Smooth and rich with a citrusy zing

  • Slightly floral with a hint of spice if additional ingredients are added

  • Balanced between sweet and aromatic, not overly sugary

If you prefer your hot chocolate very sweet, you might want to add a little extra sugar or honey. If you enjoy the tea’s natural bitterness, keep the sweetness moderate.

How to Make Earl Grey Hot Chocolate at Home

Making Earl Grey hot chocolate is simple and rewarding. Here’s a basic recipe to get you started:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)

  • 1 Earl Grey tea bag or 1 teaspoon loose leaf Earl Grey tea

  • 6 teaspoons of May I Hot Chocolate for 200ml cup or the 2 steps below if you dont have May I Hot Chocolate mix

  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder or 1 ounce dark chocolate

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar or sweetener of choice (adjust to taste)

  • Optional: cinnamon stick, vanilla extract, whipped cream for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan until it’s warm but not boiling.

  2. Add the Earl Grey tea bag or loose tea and steep for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on how strong you want the tea flavour.

  3. Remove the tea bag or strain the leaves.

  4. Whisk in the May I Hot Chocolate powder and bring to boil until it thickens or mix in cocoa powder or melted chocolate until smooth.

  5. Add sugar or sweetener to taste if not using May I hot chocolate mix. If using May I it already contain sugar.

  6. Optional: stir in a cinnamon stick or a drop of vanilla extract for extra flavour.

  7. Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream if desired.

This method lets the tea infuse the milk, blending the flavours naturally. You can adjust the strength of the tea or the richness of the chocolate to find your perfect balance.
